Why Liquid Screed

Flatter floors, laid in a fraction of the time

Liquid screed is pumped in and finds its own level, so you get a flat, consistent surface across large areas far quicker than traditional sand and cement. It flows tight around underfloor heating pipes with no voids, which means better heat transfer and a more efficient floor.

It lets us cover a lot of ground in a day and hand the floor back sooner, so the trades behind you are not left waiting.

Floor Preparation

A screed is only as good as the base beneath it

Prior to laying screed it is vital that the subfloor is prepared correctly. Rushing or skipping this stage is one of the most common causes of a failed floor, from cracking and hollow spots to damp and moisture damage further down the line. We take the time to get the base right so the finished floor performs for years.

Floor preparation for liquid screed typically involves:

  • Cleaning and levelling the subfloor
  • Laying a damp proof membrane
  • Installing rigid floor insulation
  • Applying a perimeter expansion strip
  • Fitting a tanking membrane
  • Setting out underfloor heating, where fitted

01 Subfloor Preparation

Getting the base flat and clean

Using laser levels, we assess the evenness of the subfloor and remove any high or low points as required. The surface is then cleaned to clear debris and contaminants, so every layer above it can sit and bond correctly.

This is the stage most problems trace back to, which is exactly why we do not cut corners on it.

02 Damp Proof Membrane

Keeping moisture out

A damp proof membrane, typically 1200 gauge, is laid to form an impermeable barrier across the floor. This prevents damp working its way up into the insulation and screed above.

Protecting the build-up from moisture safeguards both the floor and its long-term thermal performance.

03 Insulation

Warmth and efficiency built in

Screed is commonly laid over rigid floor insulation such as PIR or EPS. Properly installed insulation makes a significant difference to heat loss and helps maximise energy efficiency.

Boards are selected for the right compressive strength, thermal value and depth, then tightly butt jointed with staggered joints. Any small gaps are filled to eliminate lateral movement.

04 Expansion Strip & Tanking Membrane

Room to move, sealed to pour

A foam edge strip, usually 8 to 10mm, is fitted to the perimeter. This allows the screed to expand and contract as it dries and, where underfloor heating is fitted, as the floor warms and cools.

A tanking membrane is then laid over the insulation, up to at least the height of the edge strip. It encapsulates the screed and stops the liquid escaping once it is poured.

05 Underfloor Heating

Set out ready for the pour

Where underfloor heating is being installed, we set out and secure the pipework before the screed goes down. Because liquid screed flows and self-levels, it surrounds the pipes completely with no voids.

That means better contact, faster heat transfer and a more efficient, even floor than you would get with traditional screed.

Liquid screed questions, answered

How long does liquid screed take to dry?
It depends on the product, the depth and the conditions on site, so we will always give you a realistic timeline for your specific floor. As a rough guide you can usually walk on it within 24 to 48 hours, but full drying before floor coverings go down takes longer. We will tell you exactly what to expect.
Is liquid screed good for underfloor heating?
It is ideal. Because the screed flows and self-levels, it wraps tight around the heating pipes with no voids, which gives better heat transfer and a more efficient, responsive floor than traditional screed.
What is the difference between anhydrite and cementitious screed?
Anhydrite (calcium sulphate) screeds flow well and are excellent for underfloor heating, but need to be kept dry and usually have their surface sanded before floor coverings. Cementitious liquid screeds are more moisture tolerant and dry differently. We will recommend the right one for your job and floor finish.
What size jobs do you take on?
All of them. We price everything from a single domestic room to large commercial and new-build floors, with no fixed minimum or maximum. If you are not sure whether your job is suitable, just ask.
Do you supply the concrete and screed, or do I arrange it?
Whichever suits you. We can supply the materials or pump what you have arranged. Just let us know your preference when you enquire.
